Why I do what I do

This website will give you a glimpse into my work as an artist,  community builder and activist. I have been negotiating the world through the lens of a creative entrepreneur for the last two decades. It's been a wonderful journey with a lot of learning and collaborating with people I deeply respect.
In the coming years, I believe that creative thinkers will be crucial to document, stitch, hold and present the world. We are at the very edge of collapse on one side, and of a future that can spin out into unimaginable wonders on the other. I believe we can get to the happier side by working together!

Jan 10th. Sketches for new pieces (duo series)

c
January 9th, 2008

Here are some sketches for new pieces. I want to work on a series of two or more images of women – friends, confidantes..mirror images..
This time though the sketches are loose -done for a size reference really. So that I know how big , and what shape to build my next frame.
I will be drawing and painting directly on the canvas so that the work has a looser, more fluid quality.
I also like what Nirali said about a series done of the little sketches in my previous entry – to treat them as paintings, so I will be doing that as well.
I have little canvases that I’ve prepared and I will be doing them with acrylics and treating them as little miniatures. I wanted to show you girls something that I read about in a recent article about an international collaboration that these two guys were doing. I will post this by tommorrow in our little sketchbook section that Archana has set up. Please go through it. It is extremely fascinating.
Next week, I’ll be back to posting paintings – colour! Thanks as always ladies, for the great support, and constructive feedback.

  • I really like this idea about the mirror image. And specially with human forms. As the same pose in different directions creates a new identity for the form… thus making them different. (You get what I am saying…)
I like your lines, they are fluid and easy flowing.
Are these models posing for you?

  • hey nirali, its actually a program that I bought. Models pose for this company, and then you can buy the poses. I find that now when I’m trying to explore the whole painting surface – not just the model, its less important for me to select the model and the pose. Of course, there is a question of whether or not I like the pose!

  • hmmm…this is interesting. actually the poses are important. of course you are in a mood of focusing on the entirety of the frame, but i think the poses you choose are important in conveying the mood. the background underlines it. no?
Im really enthu to go off and do some life-studies. i have been dreaming of inviting someone to come and model for me – I’ll have to set it up though.
Here’s what Im curious about: what is the meaning (even subconscious) of the particular poses that you have chosen. Why this versus 200 others in the programs database? how does the chosen pose affect the thought, the mood that you are depicting? are these the questions that you are asking when you go off to make a paiinting, or is there some other process in place? if it is some other process – what is it?
