Why I do what I do

This website will give you a glimpse into my work as an artist,  community builder and activist. I have been negotiating the world through the lens of a creative entrepreneur for the last two decades. It's been a wonderful journey with a lot of learning and collaborating with people I deeply respect.
In the coming years, I believe that creative thinkers will be crucial to document, stitch, hold and present the world. We are at the very edge of collapse on one side, and of a future that can spin out into unimaginable wonders on the other. I believe we can get to the happier side by working together!

Snakes & Lotuses: All India Tour

June 17th, 2008

Hey guys, here is an idea that has been floating in my head the last few days. To begin at the beginning:
Lounge Piranha will be touring India in the month of September. For me this will be a fantastic trip where I video performance art with the band and really get to see and be part of the music scene across the country. After a lot of thinking and weighing the pros and cons I have decided to go with it.

It was a difficult decision to make as it means that I will have to take a whole month off from painting in my studio. What really upped the pros for me was when I hit upon the idea that I could replicate my Berlin-Naples shows of Snakes & Lotuses along the band trail, thus exhibiting across the country (if things fall into place). This immediately makes my time far better utilized and my sabbatical away from the studio a little more forgivable. Yeah?

I have no clue where to start and what to do. Any advice? My game plan is to start approaching galleries in each of these cities and see if they can slot me in on the dates that I have. The shows could be 1,2 or 3 days long dependent on how long I’m in the city. I will be there to do a poetry performance piece on any 1 day at each city.
My constraints are several –
1. My dates sadly are not changeable
2. I have NO money (for gallery rentals or publicity collaterals)
3. I know no-one in the art scene.
My plus points are –
1. I don’t know if anyone has done this traveling art show like this, so ppl might be interested to present me?
2. I am not picky about the gallery space (it could even be an open studio or an informal cultural space. The main thing is to connect with a place that pulls in artists and those interested in art
3. My exhibition is designed to travel. Its light and goes up and comes down very easily

Girls I think this is a grrreat test run for 3For when we are ready. A lot of the lessons I learn on this project will be super useful to us as a group – and of course will be posted in here. I’m terrified as it means a TON of work and organization for me to do alongside the Video Art for and band work. Tell me – am I being foolish and biting off more than I can chew?

My tentative dates for each city is as follows (dates in bold are dates clear of any band shows):
Mumbai – Sept 20, 21
Baroda – Sept 22, 23
Ahmedabad – Sept 24, 25
Delhi – Sept 26, 27, 28, 29 30
Calcutta – Oct 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6
Hyderabad – Oct 7, 8, 9
Pondi – 12, 13
Chennai – 14, 15, 16

As an end note – I guess I wont be able to show my work in all the above listed cities. My hope is that I manage to at least cover Baroda, Ahm, Mumbai, Delhi and Calcutta. The others are closer home and I can do it on my own steam you know. These northern cities I doubt I can afford monetarily to fund my travel and lodging on my own.

Nirodh – you are my only hope to find a gallery/space in Baroda to do this yeah? And if you know any folks in Mumbai, Delhi from your Saffron Art days – please, please email intro me na.

  • hey arch, its great to see how you’re thinking. i dont believe that you are biting off more than you can chew. mainly because you have done this once before, and you have an idea of what it entails.
i suck at approaching galleries!! so, i dont have any ideas really, except to go with confidence, and to definitely mention that you started your travelling show in berlin. i think people will be impressed with that. also, it will make for great documentation for future projects.
maybe before you start the tour, you can do some research on the cities, and see what they have going on in terms of art, and spaces. i think this would be very helpful as it will give you a place to start instead of having to blindly start your search, and in such time constraints.
its a great idea, and i think that you can do it.
good luck to you girl! of course you will have your sketchbook while travelling right? so then you wont really be out of your studio. you’ll just be collecting material to go back and to hammer out new work!

  • thanks pooj :) yeah your point about the sketch-book thing is valid. i will keep sketching.
so I managed to get one gallery fixed up here in Blore. And i did exactly as you suggested. Took my work as well as pics of the Naples and Berlin show. Of course, the gallery was inclined as it is owned by Suresh Jayaram (our erstwhile art history teacher).

Its a beautiful space and really quite perfect for what I am attempting. So this will happen on 4,5 & 6th July. Will keep us in touch with how I plan for it and what I do in prep yeah.

The timing is god coz then I have some time to do some research and reach out to other galleries. My plan is to actually try and fix things up before I head over to those places as much as possible as my band work will be quite a chunk to deal with already.

  • great news arch! you are going full steam ahead! congrats
