Why I do what I do

This website will give you a glimpse into my work as an artist,  community builder and activist. I have been negotiating the world through the lens of a creative entrepreneur for the last two decades. It's been a wonderful journey with a lot of learning and collaborating with people I deeply respect.
In the coming years, I believe that creative thinkers will be crucial to document, stitch, hold and present the world. We are at the very edge of collapse on one side, and of a future that can spin out into unimaginable wonders on the other. I believe we can get to the happier side by working together!

New York City – The Beginning

August 27th, 2008

So, as you girls know I have my first show in NYC! I’m stoked.
This is the way it started.
Having a website is really an important thing I feel, as you have the opportunity to show your work to a whole lot of people, including gallery scouts. Over time I have had a number of people contact me with regard to showing my work in their galleries – mainly web spaces though. Nothing I felt inclined to push.
I got an email about a mth ago from the exhibition assistant at ICO gallery in NY. He had seen my work, and thought the gallery would welcome the opportunity to work with me.
So, I emailed back, and started correspondence with the owner of the gallery. I liked the guy, and thought I’d give it a chance – after looking up their website, and studying a bit about them. I also really liked the location, as it is in Tribeca – a great part of NY.
Also, when the hell will I have this kind of opportunity the next time. Usually we have to beat on the doors of galleries to give us a chance. This, will give me some kind of leverage – I’m thinking.
Heres the catch – nothing is ever easy is it?!
They wanted a fee upfront and then would take a lower commission at the back. Impossible for me! So, after talking to a whole bunch of people, and deciding that it would be a good move for me to pursue this and consider it an investment in myself, I spoke with good ol Nirali who suggested I simply negotiate with them.
So, I negotiated and they agreed to my terms. Basically, taking less upfront, and more at the back – through commissions. I’m ok with this.
I feel I have to break into the art scene sooner than later, and it definitely is pushing me to produce. Also, this looks damn good on my resume!
I will be represented by the gallery for a yr. After that, like a lot of galleries, they see where our relationship can go for the next yr.
My first show is in December, the 2nd through the 21st- before christmas, which I hope will be good for my art sales! And, a great end to the year 2008!
Thats it! The info for my first show in NYC!

  • Babe well done!! This is the best news ever. Supa proud of you. You will rock it!

I completely agree with you. If you have the money, invest it in your art. Truly if you take your work seriously, others will.

Dec is coming up fast. So get on it. It would be good to get pics of the gallery (if you cant get there in person) so that you will be able to plan you exhibition for that space.

Also start compiling a guest list. Ppl that you would like to come see your work from a strategic point of view – buyers, gallery reps, critics, friends who have connections into worlds that will encourage your career et al.

But all that is secondary. The main thing is of course your paintings. So what are you thinking of in your head? Use us as a trashing board to sound your ideas and get feedback. 3For is perfectly suited to give you critical external views of your work heeheehee (I sound like some ad salesman) so keep us posted!

  • You rock arch! you know how happy i am that 3for was created? I hope Rachna is looking down on us, and is happy to see what we are doing, and attempting to do. I really miss her, and attribute everything to her – you know?.. All the art she used to do, her enthusiasm with everything..
Thanks for the guest list idea. I was making mental notes, but i got to write it all down!
The gallery actually selected my Landscape of Dreams series. Sorry i forgot to put that in the blog. Anyway, so they picked three pieces that I already have, and I have to make 5 more. Basically continuing with the series ( series obsession with galleries drives me bonkers sometimes!!). I have finished one more that i wanted to post today, but its so gloomy and rainy outside that i will have to wait till tomorrow. Cant wait to share with you girls!

  • one quick thing before I time out – make the edit about the series selection of the gallery in the blog post. you can easily do that – and it will be good to have that info on the main post you know…

  • Hey, Pooja, it so good to know that things are falling in place. I have been absconding and now really want to get back.
Yeah, its right that, use your money in buying materials for your art… not to give it gallery people, who’ll anyway make a million with your art!!
