Why I do what I do

This website will give you a glimpse into my work as an artist,  community builder and activist. I have been negotiating the world through the lens of a creative entrepreneur for the last two decades. It's been a wonderful journey with a lot of learning and collaborating with people I deeply respect.
In the coming years, I believe that creative thinkers will be crucial to document, stitch, hold and present the world. We are at the very edge of collapse on one side, and of a future that can spin out into unimaginable wonders on the other. I believe we can get to the happier side by working together!

In My Dreams – Fourth in LD series:24″x22.5″

August 30th, 2008

Hey Girls, continuing on my Landscape of Dreams series, this is the fourth piece in the series.
I’m actually very happy with it. I feel like this series is teaching me a lot. There is more colour, and more depth in this particular work.
Also, I started posing for the new work myself, as its a more personal group of work and speaks to me more clearly – I understand the subject better!
I am planning on doing four more pieces to complete this group. Out of which six will be in the NYC show.
With this work, I started on a black background which I’ve really been wanting to try. It had some challenges – like I really had to push the colours otherwise the painting was looking dead. Also, the painting looks totally different if there is no light on it. So, in other words, the work needs a spotlight.
I still feel like I’m scratching the surface -like there is so much underneath that I need to explore and push out. I think for this reason it helps that i have to continue with the series. Also, I am producing more work, faster, which forces me to go on pure instinct which is great – Then whether or not the work is a “success”, I end up being happy with it as I learned so much in the process!

  • Pooj – this is gorgeous! I love the idea that you have shifted to using yourself as a model. This somehow makes a lot of sense to me – not sure why, but I do feel an intrinsic connection to the work. It feels like the work is more truthful. You are rocking the boat babe :)

I agree about the lighting. With my 3Me (still incomplete) self with snakes I worked in a completely darkened studio with only tungsten lights on me and the canvas. When I see this work in daylight, the colours look crazy orange-red-kitsch. Ah I thought – this is how all the Bollywood bilboards were painted in the days. I dont love it in hind-sight, but it was something to note.
love your idea to experiment with a black base. It must have been rather difficult to cope with that…any more tips on that? would you want to continue that trend? would you want to experiment with another colour?

  • hey arch! thanks so much for the comments. i’m so happy that you like the work. I know i can rely on you and nirali to be honest, that is one of the reasons why i value you girls opinion so much!
I do like the black background, and i will definitely work with it more. its just different because it kills the natural light of the canvas – as you know.
When I started the work, i had to be patient, and force myself to keep at it. In fact, in all the pieces done in this series so far, i’ve tried to experiment with something new, and see how i like it.
I’m experimenting in different colours for this series, but i have a feeling that there might be one more piece done in black.
Tips on working with black? I think for me it helped to consider what colours i wanted to use before hand. Since black is so hard, I had to study the drawing longer to see what would/could work on it. After that, i used a lot of layers to punch up the colour – as opposed to just laying down a colour that i thought i wanted to use. I thought this would look a bit flat, and possibly garish. Does that help?
I do like what you said about bollywood poster painters. Theres something so cultural about that, that i feel it could be something to explore.
Are you going to finish up the 3Me painting?
