Why I do what I do

This website will give you a glimpse into my work as an artist,  community builder and activist. I have been negotiating the world through the lens of a creative entrepreneur for the last two decades. It's been a wonderful journey with a lot of learning and collaborating with people I deeply respect.
In the coming years, I believe that creative thinkers will be crucial to document, stitch, hold and present the world. We are at the very edge of collapse on one side, and of a future that can spin out into unimaginable wonders on the other. I believe we can get to the happier side by working together!

Rachna’s Portrait – Completion Work

November 13th, 2008

Full Canvas (2.5x3feet)

Detail – top right corner

Detail – foreground

Girls – Rachna’s mom wants me to complete a painting that Rachna had started a couple of years ago. Its a self portrait. I am going to slowly start working on it, but would really really like to have you both give me some pointers on how to do this.

This looks like an early work of hers, and I wonder what was going on through her head when she started painting it…

Perhaps we could leave the parts that she painted (esp her self-portrait) untouched. With the background too, rather than impose any of our ideas, we should just fill in the outlines that she has drawn. Yeah?

There is a little pocket watch in the foreground. And a pair of reading glasses that I think are hers in the mid ground. 3 playing cards – King, Queen and Joker – in the top right corner and a checkered pattern on the floor that is drawn in perspective.

I’m all ears…

  • kind of spooky.. reminds me of a dali painting..
to me it seems like shes thinking about life and ascendence..shes contemplating. theres the cards, the stairs, the watch, and also a tree- like organic form..cycle of life?
shes also put herself in there, in the self portrait, and the glasses. where is her place in this cycle of things?
i agree with you. dont touch what she did. add to it. i suggest thin layers..transparent, kind of like life..
question is, do you want to help answer her questions? put your own answers? your own questions? i would leave the main colour in green..

  • Hey Arcna… I was thinking, that maybe you can just use your linear ink sketcy style to complete the remaining… it would also retain the feel of the painting, as done by Rach.

  • girls thanks for the inputs! this is really a difficult one for me to work on. I have kinda decided to keep your ideas in the back of my head as I proceed forward in a intuitive mode.
Today I have finished working on the floor tiles. I used a burnt sienna for it. left the canvas white showing through for alternate tiles. I think the basic thing is that I really dont want to impose any external ideas onto it. I just going to work on it like a studio artist flunky would – you know, no questions asked and just execution. yeah??

  • also girls – the bad news is that my laptop crashed on sunday. the hard disk has failed – and I lost all my data. yep including my Going Nowhere print ready book :(

well I am now in the process of trying to get my comp back to life. this is tough and expensive coz it a damn Mac!

    Ja Mann…I am a little stressed :(

Hopefully will get it all back EOD today? If not, expect a update post on rachs painting mid week…

  • shit! that sucks. damn computers. maybe you should start saving everything on a disc from now on! that really is annoying.

  • do that already…but hadnt backed up data for the last 2 months…laziness leads to loss!!

tell us more about your exhibition prepping…

  • yeah, sucks – procrastination is the artists biggest weakness!
