Why I do what I do

This website will give you a glimpse into my work as an artist,  community builder and activist. I have been negotiating the world through the lens of a creative entrepreneur for the last two decades. It's been a wonderful journey with a lot of learning and collaborating with people I deeply respect.
In the coming years, I believe that creative thinkers will be crucial to document, stitch, hold and present the world. We are at the very edge of collapse on one side, and of a future that can spin out into unimaginable wonders on the other. I believe we can get to the happier side by working together!

In Memory Of

Hey girls some supa exciting news – Suresh Jayaram has lent me his gallery – 1Shanthi Road Gallery to work in for a week starting tomorrow.
Here are my plans:
I plan to make a site-specific installation-performance. Essentially I am going to hole myself up in this space and scribble all the things that flow into my head onto the wall. I plan to treat the wall as a large large page in my sketch-book.
If luck goes my way, I will do a time-elapse of the whole 3 days process and then create a movie of it that I will project back (perhaps on the wall) at the gallery.
If time permits I would also like to the 2-300 frames I have from my hand-drawn animation to create a collage of repetitive images upon which I will be projecting the animation.
There will be 3 mobiles with a curated selection of prints of drawings from my books. these will be free-floating and similar to what I showed at Naples.
There will a set of 15 book-prints. I look at each of my sketch-books to be original works of art. I will have each one re-produced using a Xerox machine once. There are the Artist Prints of the originals. There will only be this one reproduction of each book in the whole world… :) yep they are for sale, but I dont expect anyone to actually buy anything I have at this show…
I like the overall feel of impermanence of the medium, of the work of everything I am doing in this show. It is exactly that, that the books – my drawings and writings talk about. It is ‘In Memory Of’ all the people, thoughts, things, moments that I saw, touched and experienced at some point in my life and reproduced with my words and drawings…
So I feel that the way this exhibition is shaping itself up – having prints and reproductions and re-runs and repetitiveness as the means to display and the means to work with the space makes sense.

What say?

  • hey arch! this show sounds really fantastic. good luck with it! a couple of questions – are you going to be sleeping at the gallery or just holing yourself in for 8hrs? i think its a whole different ball game if you sleep there! is it safe though? the one thing is documenting yourself and projecting it as a movie. but remember that if its too long different people will only see different snippets of it.
the other thing is people actually coming in and seeing you doing these things.
true performance art. that would be wild. i dont think its been done in india has it? wish i could send you a subscription to an art mag here showing you what people are doing currently.
anyway, you’ve always been ahead of the curve dear and i know you will be noticed and go very far!
the one thing is : seems like there is too much going on – or maybe that is the way it comes across from reading. my opinion is, its one thing to show how much stuff you’ve done. but sometimes you can get max impact from simplicity.
whatever you do, its going to be really great. this can also be a piece that you recreate in different cities/countries – no?
good luck again! i know it will be a smash! i think you’ll prob sell the books. its a great idea

  • hey Arc…. How did it go? Please tell us all about the show, response, the performance, the selling and so on…
