Why I do what I do

This website will give you a glimpse into my work as an artist,  community builder and activist. I have been negotiating the world through the lens of a creative entrepreneur for the last two decades. It's been a wonderful journey with a lot of learning and collaborating with people I deeply respect.
In the coming years, I believe that creative thinkers will be crucial to document, stitch, hold and present the world. We are at the very edge of collapse on one side, and of a future that can spin out into unimaginable wonders on the other. I believe we can get to the happier side by working together!

City Signals: Sonic-Video Art Interventions

February 1st, 2009

What started as an experiment as part of the Social Art in the Public Realm Workshop that I was recently part of, has now become a big ambition for me.

Rahul Giri, Ricard Widerberg (from Sweden) and I went off to the Shivajinagar Bus-stand underground subway and carried out a two hour long sonic-video art intervention on the 27th of January this year.

It essentially was an experiment where we were looking at the city through sound and video samples. Each of us gathered samples of the city on our own, then met at the subway and performed to an audience of passers-by. The whole thing was a very spontaneous and live interaction between us artists, the people and the space. It was absolutely amazing!

In the attempt to get permissions to do this, I got to meet with the MD of the BMTC, Mr. Pasha. He is an great man and we had a very interesting conversation on ways through which art could be used to connect people to public spaces across the city. If things go well, I will become the artist liaison for the BMTC and will be conducting more such experiments. Yep this is exactly the way it should be :)

  • Hey Arcna, it sounds super cool. you are doing great, very happy 4 u :-))
Can you also post some video stuff or images of the city that u presented…

  • Am in the process of editing the documentation video of the show. will post it once its ready.

The pics are of the the show only. The city I presented in and of is Blore…that footage gets mixed and edited live at the shows, so the best way to see it is to be there. If not, then to see the documentation videos/pics of the show.

  • totally agree. this piece – loving the concept – i’m missing the eneergy, feel of the piece. really feel i need to be there to experience this – especially if we’re talking sound and vision. i can also see this kind of work taken indoors and projected onto blank museum walls. arch you are making progress in leaps and bounds! super cool, super exciting. question – think about if you want to show someone this piece how would you effectively convey the mood, the energy of the piece.
if you want to take your work to different places/people- you might have to more effectively bring this across.

  • Yeah…I have to get some edit time so that I can put some footage someone shot together is a nice way. I have simply been a bit too tied up :(

The other thing is that I get completely focused on putting the show together and making it happen…documenting it really suffers. I really wish there was some one who enjoyed video work or photo work who would team up with me for these experiments. This time I got lucky that there were a couple of artists there who volunteered to shoot some footage.

Yeah – we did this same show at 1 Shanthi Road Gallery the next day…it was pretty fun, but to be completely honest the grungy, crowded, crazy feel of the subway was missing for us performers…
