Why I do what I do

This website will give you a glimpse into my work as an artist,  community builder and activist. I have been negotiating the world through the lens of a creative entrepreneur for the last two decades. It's been a wonderful journey with a lot of learning and collaborating with people I deeply respect.
In the coming years, I believe that creative thinkers will be crucial to document, stitch, hold and present the world. We are at the very edge of collapse on one side, and of a future that can spin out into unimaginable wonders on the other. I believe we can get to the happier side by working together!

What is Art…

c
July 2nd, 2010

I started to think about what art is when my friend Udai SMS’ed me with the eternally asked question – What is Art? So here is what I think:

Walking by, and as the setting sun floods your eyes, you realise that this air in your lungs, and this wind on your skin, and this tangy, salty taste of the ocean on your tongue are mere clues to who you are and what this life and this universe means. So you stop for just that one moment, to salute the vast coincidence that conspired, almost playfully, to show you all that you belong to and all that belongs to you.

Its been a long year, full of new things and great moments for us all. Its also wonderful to return to our roots here on 3For. The whole process of getting married, the preparing for 2 weddings across 7 seas, the thinking, planning, dreaming. And the roller-coaster as time swept and swirled around me and drove me to a new phase and a new life that all my loved ones celebrated. It was and remains a special time for me.

As part of my wedding I created a series of 600 drawings (ink on paper) as thank-you gifts to the wonderful people who came to share and be part of these most important days with me. That, combined with the research and detailing it took to pull off these weddings are something that I approached as an art project. Perhaps for our show, this is what I will work on…so that my work is a reflection of my life. Does this make sense? I am not sure what form it all will take…but I would love to try it out.

If we want to do this at Jaaga, we should think about how our work can feed into/reflect the vision of that space in addition to how the three of us connect our works to each other. let’s jam on this…

i loved your poem. its so true, and very profound. we are a mere little speck in this vastness of beauty. where and how do we fit in?
lets start up some conferencing so we can discuss the issues about the upcoming show, and what we can do to make it all fit in – to one another, as well as to the space.
