Why I do what I do

This website will give you a glimpse into my work as an artist,  community builder and activist. I have been negotiating the world through the lens of a creative entrepreneur for the last two decades. It's been a wonderful journey with a lot of learning and collaborating with people I deeply respect.
In the coming years, I believe that creative thinkers will be crucial to document, stitch, hold and present the world. We are at the very edge of collapse on one side, and of a future that can spin out into unimaginable wonders on the other. I believe we can get to the happier side by working together!

Square and Circle

October 9th, 2010

Hello Gurls,

I am all set to work on this new series which I plan to do for our show in Jaaga this coming Jan. Just before I get into it, I have to complete painting of a wooden box for a show in ‘The Strand Art Room’. a gallery in Colaba, Mumbai. The show marks the 2nd anniversary of the gallery. I have posted the initial images of the box. And as I proceed will post more.

About our show, I have also posted the images of the stretchers and the canvas roll, which has to be stretched. I am planning to do about 10 square canvases, not too big. The idea behind the show is about the first impressions I had of the city-Baroda after I revisited it in 2007, with an aim to pursue my art practice here. What caught my attention here, were the attractive circles, with sculpted areas in or around them, some of them done by some noteworthy artists of the city. Baroda has the over-empowering prescence of the Sayajirao legacy which adds to the rich cultural and artistic ethos of the city. I realised that these circles, though located at hubs, are always in the passing and I actually never had a chance to see them in detail or closely, unless I intentionally stayed on. The idea of the circle is to move on in either direction. The circle in the city marks the various centres in the city, a meeting point from which there is constant movement. Whereas a square in a city usually denotes a space to hang out, like a social gathering… for example at Time square in NY. This idea intrigued me and probed me to work with squares and circles in a city, also as my earlier work deals with the structure in a painting. The process of executon, the drips of paint etc. Thus I found a connection with my work. The circles and squares can be a a building block of an art work. I enjoy taking literally from meanings of words and connecting them to a context. At the same time keeping up with my expression in paint…

Hmm.. lets see how this all happens :-)

My next move is to navigate the city and take pictures of the various circles…
