Why I do what I do

This website will give you a glimpse into my work as an artist,  community builder and activist. I have been negotiating the world through the lens of a creative entrepreneur for the last two decades. It's been a wonderful journey with a lot of learning and collaborating with people I deeply respect.
In the coming years, I believe that creative thinkers will be crucial to document, stitch, hold and present the world. We are at the very edge of collapse on one side, and of a future that can spin out into unimaginable wonders on the other. I believe we can get to the happier side by working together!

Show idea

November 10th, 2010
Ok, so after months of thinking – and finally seeing the Jaaga space, I have finally come up with an idea for a series!!!! Arch you’re right the tradional 2d works wont do.
My new idea is to work on one huge painting done on canvas unframed. This painting will be split up into panels that hang from the ceiling with some kind of wire or thread attachment. I’m thinking four panels. I’m still working on refining the sketch. Think japanese paintings.
The subject will be figurative – because thats what my work is about, but it will also deal with dreams and such. I have all these ideas and honestly i dont know how i will tie them together. I just am going to go for it and trust my instincts with this piece. It will combine a lot of elements that I find interesting and am drawn to – like fish and birds : )
I’ll tell you this – it will be super interesting to see how i pull it together!!
Not sure about the size yet. I have to measure out the drawing and work out the proportions. I’m thinking about 3feet tall – i dont think that anything smaller would really work and anything bigger i dont believe i will have the time to complete.

  • ok, i am having trouble posting on the blog directly, so i sent this as an email first. i dont know how to add the art label!!!!

  • well…so you would have to come back to the blog and then click on the small little icon at the bottom of the article (looks like a tiny spanner with wings or something). This will take you to the edit page.

If not, click on Design at the top right of the page and then go to edit post.

  • I like the idea for tapestry…if possible try to make em a little longer…
looking forward to seeing what comes up…blog away.

  • Re the installation…perhaps there are supporting imagery, documents, text that can be created with very little effort that can be used to leverage the space.

For eg. with nirali’s circle theme, she can use that form and parts of it to create a link between the space (jaaga structure) and her paintings. She can do so by perhaps making a huge circle on the floor of one room which contains maybe 1 or 2 of her works, in another room, she can use a smaller part of a circle on the wall or ceiling…so on and so forth.

The building is huge…we have to control the entire space or at least large sections of it through our work, otherwise it will drown out our work because it is so very loud and strong.

Does this make sense to think of supporting props at it were…

We will of course have some excerpts from the blog….but beyond that…

  • Hey arc,
As I spoke about my idea of having a circle in the middle and people walking around it to see it…
Lets see…I shall think abt it.
Maybe as a background or backdrop for my paintings, I can have white circular or square cut out and my painting is positioned in the middle of it…
I am thinking of the various possibilities… Right now I am busy making the paintings!!

  • Hey poojie…
I really like your idea of tapestry. I was also thinking if you are hanging it from the ceiling and if it is positioned slightly of the edges, even the backside could be seen and maybe worked upon. Whatever it would turn out… and yeah if your getting it in a roll, maybe a little bigger also might be nice. But 3 feet is also would work… what say arc :)

  • ok. sounds good. i will put together some stuff.
